Public Education & Advocacy
In order to address alcohol and drug use and its complications, NACADA organizes sensitizations and structured training targeting families, workplaces, schools, and communities. These sensitizations aim to create awareness on how to go about preventing alcohol and drug use at home, school, workplace, and community. Training on drug use prevention builds the capacity of participants to understand and implement evidence-based interventions.
Comprehensive substance use prevention efforts cut back workplace accidents, lost productivity, compensation, claims and employee health costs. Employers should:
- Embed substance use prevention in health and wellness programs/strategies;
- Provide information and messages to working parents on substance use prevention;
- Include stress management programs and strategies;
- Provide brief interventions, counseling, and referral services to employees on substance use disorders; Guarantee confidentiality of employees as part of combating stigma against seeking help.
NACADA offers training, sensitization, and support to institutions in the public and private sectors towards the prevention of drug use within their workplaces. Communities can use their local knowledge and adopt effective approaches to prevent and reduce alcohol and drug abuse by changing collective rather than individual behavior while being sensitive to value systems. Communities can make a difference through:
- Supporting the enforcement of alcohol, tobacco and drug policies at local levels;
- Preventing the sale and consumption of alcohol and drugs to underage children;
- Providing community care and support for affected individuals and families; and
- Supporting alcohol and tobacco free zones
NACADA supports counties to control accessibility of alcohol and tobacco through policies and laws. We also encourage community based organizations and communities to take steps towards achieving the above. Coalitions can be instrumental towards building communities free from the negative effects of drug use.
Parents have the greatest influence in helping their children grow happy and learn to cope well in difficult life situations such as enticement to use alcohol and drugs. Parents should:
- Be warm and responsive by displaying affection and complementing good behavior;
- Establish rules and boundaries to enhance acceptable behavior;
- Closely monitor free time and activities their children engage in;
- Be actively involved by monitoring school work, knowing their children’s friends &
- Be positive role models.
FACT: Children whose parents use alcohol are three times more likely to develop a substance use disorder, including addiction. (NACADA, 2011 (provide link))
NACADA works with faith-based institutions, resident associations, workplaces and other custodians of families to reach parents and their families.

Effective substance use prevention programmes have been linked to improved academic achievement and preventing school dropouts. Schools can make a difference through:
- Creating a positive school culture where students feel challenged to excel, safe and supported;
- Implementing substance use policies that reduce accessibility and act as deterrents to alcohol and drug use; and
- Equipping students with relevant personal and social skills including ability to cope with social influences to smoke, drink or use drug
We work with schools towards coming up with prevention policies and implementing evidence informed interventions. NACADA is also working with the Ministry of Education to ensure drug use prevention is a priority for schools.
